Follicular Unit Extraction or FUE Hair Transplant Surgery is one of the most highly searched keywords when it comes to Hair Transplant. Most of them are keen interested to know what exact process is involved in this process and how does it differ from other processes.
What is FUE Hair Transplant Surgery?
In this technique, small round punch is used to extract follicular units from a patient’s bald resistant donor area one at a time. These 1,2,3 & 4 hair groupings which are also called as follicular unit grafts are then transplanted into a patient’s balding areas.
In simple words, FUE is a surgical process that involves removal of hair follicles from any part of your body like the face, chest, legs, beard and planting them on the hairless portion.
This is one of the latest techniques adopted by most of the surgeons since the surgery outcome is permanent and natural.
FUE can be done in a single or several settings depending on the type of hair loss an individual has. The FUE process is manual and time-consuming but gives very natural results and leaves behind no marks. However, it is not cost effective process and is time-consuming both for Surgeon and the patients as well.
Here are the steps:
Step 1: Preparation for the hair transplant.
In the initial step of the Hair Transplant Surgery, hair follicles from the back of the head or chest or legs or any body part are removed and relocated to the balding areas.
Step 2: Donor area trimmed.
Before the surgery is started, the hair in the donor area is trimmed.
Step 3: Initial Inspection of the scalp.
Once the hair has been trimmed, initial inspection of the remaining hair, the condition of the scalp is done. If dandruff is found the case is rejected for a while and given new dates or reschedule for hair transplant.
(Please Note: When my hair was trimmed by the expert surgeon, he told me that I have a layer of dandruff and condition of scalp not in good condition for hair transplant. If done, we may not assure you for the best results.
So, I decided to take some treatments with shampoo given to use twice in a week and was all set for hair transplant after 2 weeks)
Step 4: Donor area prepared for surgery.
Once the Donor area is prepared for the surgery the first step that is carried out is giving out local anesthesia in the area where hair needs to be removed. After some minutes, the area can be now used for removing your hair tissues or grafts in a step by step manner
Step 5: Tissue in the donor area removed and the Donor area sutured.
The tissue in the donor area that contains the bald resistant hair follicles is then removed surgically and the donor area is sutured.
Step 6: Combed hair over sutured donor area.
The sutures in the donor area are hidden from the patient’s hair that is combed over them. These sutures are removed almost ten days after the hair transplant surgery.
Step 7. Donor tissue trimmed into follicular unit grafts.
Microscopes are then used by the surgical technicians to view the donor tissue for dissecting and preparing follicular unit hair grafts.
Step 8. Bald recipient area prepared.
Once the local anesthesia is given to the patient, the balding recipient area is prepared for the surgical process No trimming/removal of hair is required at the top of the recipient area.
Step 9. Incisions made in the balding areas.
Follicular Unit Grafts are placed in the tiny incisions that are made in an irregular pattern in the recipient area.
Step 10. Grafts placed according to their densities.
The smallest grafts (one and two) are placed in front of the hairline and three and four (denser than one and two) are placed behind.
Step 11. Immediately after the Hair Transplant Surgery.
After the hair transplant surgery, tiny incisions with short hair would be visible in the patient’s operated area.
Step 12. The closing of the Hair Transplant Surgery.
The incision marks heal naturally and the redness in the recipient area vanishes itself within a week.
